Afternoon Tea at Mews of Mayfair Restaurant London – Review ★★★☆☆

Two spring afternoon tea in one weekend, the weather was so good that I couldn’t resist. I normally grab afternoon teas in a hotel or in a tea room but the Mews of Mayfair restaurant is well worth a try as well:

The Mews of Mayfair Setting ★★★

This modern brasserie is located in a small alley, right in the heart of Mayfair. The restaurant is very well decorated and it’s possible to eat outside on sunny days.

It’s a personal preference but I’d rather have the tea indoor,s regardless of the weather: it’s less noisy and you will not have to bear with the smell of cigarette.

The Tea & Beverage Selection ★★

There is a decent selection on offer from the “Rare Tea Company”. It’s a good brand of loose-leaf tea but the main issue is the brewing method, which spoils the tea.

The teapots are too small compared to the quantity of tea leave inside, resulting in an excessively strong brew. You get a pot of water with it which will help control the infusion, but it won’t suffice unless you’re a super fast drinker.

The Savouries ★★★

The savouries were quite pleasant: “Prosciutto & Brie Toasted Bagel”, “Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese”, “Roast Free Range Chicken & Tarragon Mayonnaise Wrap” and “Smashed Avocado & Feta Sandwich”.

Nothing special but I appreciate the originality and the overall feeling of freshness.

The Scones ★★★

Each guest gets one plain and one fruit scone, served with the usual strawberry jam and clotted cream. Once again, nothing to report.

The Cakes & Sweets ★★

We were served with the following sweets: “Lemon & Poppy Seed Drizzle Cake”, “Rhubarb & Stem Ginger Trifle”, “Chocolate Tart-Salted Caramel-Roast Peanuts” and “Strawberry Macaroons”.

Like the rest of the food, the desserts are quite good. The macaroon was the most disappointing of the lot: the flavour felt way too artificial.

The Service ★★★

Service is perfect, attentive and polite. Expect a phone call on the day of the afternoon tea, in order to confirm your booking.

Conclusion & Overall Mark ★★

The Mews of Mayfair afternoon tea serves a good afternoon tea. The atmosphere is nice and the service is excellent.

If only the tea had been brewed a bit better and the food more impressive…
