The Zuckermonarchie Setting ★★★★

The decoration is very cute, quite girly even, so Zuckermonarchie feels a bit out of place considering its close proximity to the Reeperbahn (otherwise known as the sin mile).

The tables are at a good distance from each other and are distributed in several rooms for extra privacy, which is a very nice touch considering the small size of the café. Do note that 6 is the maximum party number, the table layout simply doesn’t allow for bigger parties.

The Tea & Beverage Selection ★★★

The tea selection is pleasant yet quite ordinary. It’s good and brewed properly but when it comes to tea, I am one tough customer!

The Breakfast Food Selection ★★★

The “Katharina die Große Frühstück” (Catherine the Great breakfast) is delightful. Each guest gets a boiled egg, ham & charcuterie, cheese, salad, fresh fruits, bread, croissant, orange juice and your choice of cake.

This is pretty much your standard German breakfast (a vegetarian option is available) with one subtle difference: guests get to choose their cake from the daily selection. This adds a much welcome variety to the breakfast and it becomes even better if your party does not mind a bit of sharing, as encouraged by the three-tier stand!

The Afternoon Tea Food Selection ★★★

If you fancy a late treat, the Zuckermonarchie afternoon tea is served every day from 3 pm onward. The afternoon tea comes with the traditional finger sandwiches, scones, macarons, your choice of cake and a pot of tea.

It’s as delicious as the breakfast and a better choice if you have a preference for cakes and sweets. I highly recommend it despite the rather restrictive booking policy: 7 days advance booking, which may be cancelled up to 24-hours prior to the afternoon tea.

Service ★★★

The staff is very polite, efficient and speaks good English. They are also very responsive via email, always useful when booking from abroad!

Conclusion & Overall Mark ★★★★★

Zuckermonarchie is worthy of its name: it’s a sweet tooth’s dream come true. The weekend only “Katharina die Große Frühstück” is delicious and the possibility to choose your own cake makes it even better. The afternoon tea is well worth a try as well, served every day at 3 pm.

The place is packed on weekends so do book a few weeks in advance for breakfast and at least 7 days in advance for the afternoon tea.
